Foreland Catskill

Foreland Catskill

Preservation Studios worked with Sister Properties to rehabilitate the former mill into event space, galleries, a co-working office, a restaurant, and artist studios. The new use respects the industrial nature of the building and its open volume by leaving structure exposed throughout and retaining large spaces within the new plan. Careful consideration was given by our client across all aspects of the project including sourcing new heavy timber beams to match where replacement was needed, casting new tie anchors to replace those that had failed at the exterior, and replicating hand cut nails for limited areas of flooring replacement.

This former mill sits along the east bank of the Catskill River and was in the mid-nineteenth century having been in near constant use. Over its long life, the building has been home to several enterprises including the Steam Wollen Company Mill, the Harris Knitting Mill, and the W.S.C. Wiley Kaaterskill Hosiery Mills. The southern portion of the building has a slight “L” shape with a tower centered at the north end, before transitioning into a trapezoidal volume at the far north end. The southern portion and tower were connected to section at the north end sometime between 1884 and 1889 during the Kaaterskill occupancy.

Preservation Studios facilitated the complete historic tax credit application process.
