Miller, Hall, & Hartwell Factories

Miller, Hall, & Hartwell Factories

Preservation Studios worked with First Columbia on two projects with a shared history. 547 River Street had the vacant office space upper floors converted to apartments with the lower floors containing a variety of uses. This project included the addition of a large rock climbing gym, which was subject to review as part of the HTC application. Across at 558 River Street, the building serves as Bargain Grocery and largely maintains the sense of open interior. It included an addition for a loading dock and an ADA compliant entry vestibule.

The first portion of The Collar Factory at 547 River Street was built in 1880 and features a blend of the Italianate and Romanesque Revival styles. A substantial addition to the north, designed by Edward Loth, was completed in 1890, nearly doubling the size of the building, followed by a one-story c.1913 garage addition. The Miller, Hall, & Hartwell Box Factory across the street at 558 River Street was built c.1915 and was historically associated with the Collar Factory, constructing boxes for the distribution of the textiles produced there.

Preservation Studios facilitated the complete historic tax credit application process, including the National Register listing.
